Abstract

In this article I examine the significance of using Critical Pedagogy in Art education. Critical Pedagogy advocates for social transformation and seeks to promote stronger critical/democratic citizenship. My approach proposes alternative readings of texts and pictures and studies artworks from the perspective of political, social and cultural production. Such a viewpoint encourages a political character to Art education and contributes to the anticipated social transformation. I also describe how I understand Radical Critical Pedagogy and show how this is manifest through some of the artworks by Maria Papacharalambous, a contemporary Greek-Cypriot artist.
