Abstract
In my paper I attempt an introductory presentation of Dimitris Papaioannou’s archive, first trying to dispel the stereotype of the static and inert repository of documents, which has fuelled a well-entrenched prejudice regarding the function and contribution of performing arts archives. I focus on the concept of the creative and living archive with special reference to the Papaioannou archive, which I liken to a cabinet of surprises, curious and paradoxical objects (Cabinet de curiosités), subject to constant renewal, enrichment and feedback.
