Abstract

This article attempts to investigate what the operatic face of Greek romanticism consist of. By examining four generations of Greek composer who created their musical work in a vast Southern-eastern European Greek-speaking area during the long nineteenth century, we will focus on those, mainly Ionians, who represent with their operas the multi-sided Greek romanticism and contributed to the diffusion of Romantic ideas in lyrical theatre and vocal music.
