Abstract
Although the presence of the modern art of dance in 20th-century Greece has been thoroughly studied, its first steps on the Modern Greek stage, before the founding of the permanent ballet of the Greek National Opera (1939), remain unknown. In this paper I attempt to examine when and how the art of ballet was introduced in Greek cultural life and to follow the path of its evolution, which is inextricably linked with 19th-c. and early 20th-c. opera.
