Abstract

The University of Nicosia, Cyprus (UNIC) is a very active and well-known university in the field of blockchain. In 2013, UNIC became the first university in the world to accept tuition fees in the form of digital currency and a year later, it launched the MSc in Blockchain and Digital Currency, which was the first of its kind. In 2015, the University of Nicosia became the first university to design, implement, and adopt a blockchain solution for the issuance and the verification of academic diplomas. Today, all UNIC diplomas are on blockchain and other organisations like the British University in Dubai use its solution. This chapter presents UNIC’s efforts to design, develop and commercialise its blockchain technology for the issuance and verification of the academic degrees as well as the discussion of its latest developments in that area.
