Abstract
Complications of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis, albeit uncommon, may occur and can lead to serious clinical events. About 10% of all intracranial suppuration are due to infections of the paranasal sinuses. However, acute rhinosinusitis is responsible for 90% of periorbital infections, especially in younger children, if preseptal infections are excluded. Orbital complications, if misdiagnosed or left untreated, may lead to serious long-term deficits, whilst intracranial ones can be harder to diagnose, require relatively long-term admissions and can be life-threatening. Osseous complications such as osteomyelitis and Pott’s puffy tumor can result in serious deformities. Intracranial, orbital and osseous complications are described in this chapter, and the basic concepts of diagnosing and treating them are presented.
