    Abstract

This chapter examines the development of the sport and fitness industry in Cyprus, utilizing available data from the records of the Cyprus Sports Organization (CSO) and findings from related studies. The industry shows a massive increase in participation and intensity, with an increasing number of stakeholders. Certain issues need to be addressed: the regulatory framework within the 1995 Law on the Licensing of Fitness Centres (fitness centres and providers); the qualifications of fitness instructors and other related issues. The Strategic Plan of the CSO for increasing participation in organized and recreational sports, fitness clubs and community sports for enhancing the fitness movement, the need for further research for producing data filling the identified gaps and the trends in sports and physical activity are being discussed.
