N2 - This chapter presents a historical synopsis of the case study, the Cyprus question, demonstrating the characteristics and variables found in protracted conflicts as analyzed in the previous chapter. The chapter focuses on the main pivotal events of each major period commencing with the 1960s and the birth of the Republic and ends with the most contemporary developments of the ‘hydrocarbons era’. The aim of the analysis of each period is not to provide a detailed historical account of the conflict; this is neither possible nor desired in the context of this book. The goal is to highlight the importance of the of the social context and the overall conflict environment, which despite its comfortableness it is ridden with conflict-perpetuating routines. Lastly, the chapter presents the main areas of contention between the two conflict parties.
