Abstract

Currently, research on seismic passive control systems concentrates on the response behavior when damping devices attached on bracings are placed within frames. The proposed concept of Adaptable Dual Control Systems (ADCS) consists of a hysteretic damper and tendons, formed in a closed circuit. ADCS are based on a dual function of the component members, resulting in two practically uncoupled systems. The primary frame is responsible for the normal vertical and horizontal forces, while the closed bracing-damper mechanism, for the earthquake forces and the necessary energy dissipation. The bracing members that are fixed at the bottom of the columns are free to move when the kinetic mechanism is activated by the ground excitation. The configuration of the ADCS is mostly critical since the bracing members' reactions on the primary frame are neutralized, for avoiding any coupling effects with the primary system. The relative displacement that is induced between the bracing members and the hysteretic damper is utilized for the necessary energy dissipation through the inelastic yielding of the steel damper plates. An example of ADCS design configuration was analytically investigated based on a simplified SDOF model. As the study results indicate, the control system may result to significant energy dissipation, when the design parameters, both geometry and mechanical properties, are predefined. The predominant parameters that characterize ADCS seismic behavior are verified in respect to their response behavior under ten selected time history earthquake records of the Greek-Mediterranean region.
