Abstract

The hepatitis A and E viruses (HAV, HEV) are transmitted by the faecal-oral route and are responsible for significant rates of morbidity in endemic areas, as well as in Western countries when outbreaks occur. Mortality rates are very low with both viruses, except pregnant women infected with HEV in the Indian subcontinent. Vaccines have been developed to prevent hepatitis A and E but only hepatitis A vaccine is available for clinical use.
