Abstract

This paper describes future applications of solid state transformers (SST) in power quality, fast charging of electrical vehicles (EV), airborne wind turbines and sub sea power grids. In addition, the paper also proposes novel flexible alternating currents system (FACTS) devices using SSTs to control the power flow in transmission lines in the form of high frequency static compensators (HFSC) and interline power quality controllers (HFIPQC). Lastly, a modular structure SST is proposed for fast charging of electrical vehicles in which they can charge from both ac and dc supplies. The proposed converters are expected to give better performance and a higher degree of reliability than conventional transformers.
