Hybrid structures. A case of a pedestrian bridge

Abstract

The development of contemporary lightweight structures has been influenced by both architectural form demands and structural optimization criteria in terms of aesthetics, stiffness and economy. The present paper exemplifies the process of the design of a pedestrian steel bridge with a span of 60 m aiming at self-weight minimization and construction standardization. The hybrid system consists of pairs of inclined pylons and primary girders that together with the secondary beams ensure a rigid diaphragm of the horizontal plane, and a secondary inclined strengthening system of cables and struts. The secondary system is responsible for a respective reduction of the bending moments in the primary members through the development of axial forces. The parametric analysis of the hybrid system with regard to its geometrical characteristics, prestress levels of the main cables and stiffness relations of its members clarifies to a significant extent the static and dynamic behavior of such hybrid systems.
