Abstract
Popular music research on Cyprus is in its infancy. This chapter seeks to address this ellipsis by considering the significance of musician, producer and music entrepreneur Kyriakos Keravnos, and in particular the music label and studio he established in the 1960s, Keravnophone Records. Keravnos is not simply of interest in his own right; he marks a kind of symbolic starting-point for popular music (in the present-day sense of the term) in Cyprus. The present ethnographic study is an attempt to recover something of those historic first steps.
