Abstract
This chapter explores strategies for reducing carbon footprints in port containerization from an Asian perspective, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Ports, responsible for handling over 80% of global trade volume, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The study examines various initiatives implemented across Asian ports to mitigate their environmental impact. Objectives include analyzing the effectiveness of green technologies, operational efficiencies, and policy frameworks in reducing emissions. The chapter presents case studies from major Asian ports, including Singapore's implementation of automated guided vehicles, which reduced CO2 emissions by 20% in a single decade, and China's Port of Shenzhen's shore power systems which decreased emissions by 95% for berthed vessels. Findings indicate that a combination of technological innovation, operational optimization, and supportive policies can lead to substantial carbon reductions. The research underscores the critical role of Asian ports in global efforts to combat climate change and achieve SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
