Abstract

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the most important single causeof maternal death in both developing and developed countries. Itarises from abnormalities in one of four basic processes, withuterine atony being the most common. A multidisciplinary approachto management is important. The value of oxytocin andprostaglandins, including misoprostol, in treatment is discussed.Recently developed, less invasive treatment options, namelyuterine tamponade and compression sutures, are fast becomingvaluable alternatives to the traditional options of pelvicdevascularization and hysterectomy. With a stark contrast inmaternal mortality from PPH between the developing anddeveloped countries, public health strategies and medicalinterventions intended to minimize this are further discussed.
