Abstract
For non-native speakers of a language, being able to communicate without violating the rules of politeness and social appropriateness in the target language is vital for successful intercultural communication. However, it has been documented by numerous studies that even advanced language learners perform requests inappropriately or simply differently to native language speakers, something that can easily lead to pragmatic misunderstandings or breakdowns in communication. This paper examines the requestive deviation of non-native speakers and of Greek non-native speakers of English in particular and argues for the use of film in the language classroom as a means for developing EFL learners' much needed pragmatic awareness.
