Abstract
The integration of biochemistry teaching into a systems-based (or organ- based) medical curriculum presents certain problems in terms of the most appropriate method of assessment of the 'Metabolism' component of the course. We describe a form of summative in-course assessment based on clinical case- histories. This novel approach has enhanced our students' motivation to learn 'Metabolism', and has been reflected in a significant improvement in their understanding of the subject.
