Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The principal focus of this paper is to explore both historically and sociologically the 1st of October' commemoration in Cyprus through newspapers' discourse for the period 1960-2002. A Hermeneutics approach is adopted to understand the different faces of the commemoration of the Cypriot Independence Day within the socio-historical context in which they have been developed. In conclusion, this research both contradicts and supplements the existing literature on the Cypriot Independence Day arguing that the 1st of October commemorative ceremony was symbolically celebrated since the birth of the Cyprus Republic going through three functionally different historical periods: 1960-1963, 1976-1992 and 1993-2002.
