The impact of financial economic crisis in the health sector

Abstract

The last six years, global community is facing an economic crisis that first appeared in USA. The current economic crisis is not only causes problems in the real economy. A sector that this crisis has caused a lot of problems is health sector. The crisis has a major impact on public health. Many people lose their job, and as a result of this, they lose their insurance coverage too. Unemployment, job insecurity and the loss of disposable income have a significant impact on health. The economic crisis has been associated with an increased number of suicides particularly in the male population. Increase in homicides, cardiovascular disease, alcohol abuse, and mortality due to communicable diseases have also been reported. As a conclusion, there is an increased morbidity mainly attributable to malnutrition, infectious diseases, alcohol abuse, and mental disorders. Populations living in extreme poverty must be supported.
