Abstract
A major cause of postpartum haemorrhage is atony of the uterus. This has been reduced by the use of oxytocic drugs, but a reliable measuring method of their actions is required. The Gaelte® intrauterine transducer-tipped catheter has been used to measure uterine activity in the third stage of labour. Myometrial action after various oxytocic drugs can be measured and their effects quantified.
