Abstract
Nicosia is clearly supportive of European Union (EU) enlargement in the West Balkans and Eastern Neighbourhood. According to the latest Eurobarometer survey (summer 2022), 58% of Cypriots support further expansion to include other countries in future. However, at the same time Cyprus is concerned with the broader implications of a larger Union. Within the national debate some issues are puzzling, such as how far and how fast the EU can grow. Does the EU need to reconsider this process and the various stages of its enlargement policy? Does it need a new institutional framework or even a new Treaty? Would it be able to function effectively as a Union of 35 or more Member States? What are the implications of slower growth? How would small states such Cyprus be affected within a larger Union?.
