Vitamin E: Future directions for understanding the anti-cancer capacity of an important micronutrient

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The past few years have seen an increasing and conflicting amount of data regarding the potential use of vitamin E in cancer chemoprevention or adjuvant chemotherapy. Promising results of in vitro and in vivo studies further supported by epidemiological evidence have been contradicted by the failure of clinical studies to confirm predicted outcomes. As a result, at the present time there is still controversy regarding the safety and efficacy of vitamin E supplementation for use in either cancer chemoprevention or adjuvant chemotherapy. By providing an overview of the similarities and differences of in vitro, in vivo, epidemiological and clinical studies, this review will aim to understand the derived contradictory results of the past. The ultimate scope of this report will be to propose some suggestions for the design of future clinical studies in order to avoid pitfalls of the past and to ultimately succeed in unraveling the mystery regarding the bona fide anti-cancer capacity of vitamin E.
